Adaptation strategies and performances of three producer groups during times of change: lessons learned from the application of the Conditions-Strategies-Performances (CSP) concept in three case studies Organic Eprints
Münchhausen, von, Susanne; Knickel, Karlheinz; Lasner, Tobias; Milestad, Rebecka.
In the analysis, we will - identify the most significant changes over time in relevant market, regulatory, institutional and territorial conditions, - assess the social, economic and other resources available among different groups of primary producers, - relate conditions and resources to the (adaptation) strategies pursued (e.g. regarding the management of the chain and risks), and - explore the (potential) impacts of the resulting (or expected) changes on social, economic and environmental performances. The analysis aims at capturing the interrelationships between external and internal conditions, (adaptation) strategies and (sustainability) performance. A first important step in the analysis is to express conditions, strategies and...

Agroforestry Options in Northwest Vietnam Organic Eprints
Hoa, Thi Do; Whitney, Cory W.; Luedeling, Eike.
The mountainous northwest of Vietnam is home for the majority of the country’s ethnic minorities. Poverty and food insecurity are common in the region, increasing population and land scarcity have induced the expansion of agricultural areas and consequent decline of land productivity due to soil erosion and land degradation. Local farmers have begun to practice agroforestry through the introduction of high value trees into traditional cropping systems with various combinations of timber, fruit, nut forage trees and annual crops. However, because of inherent production risks and many remaining uncertainties, assessing the long-term performance of agroforestry has remained challenging. We simulated prospective system benefits of agroforestry options by...

Auswahl von Feldversuchsflächen auf heterogenem Auenboden: Bestandeskartierung - Uniformitätsernten - Luftbildaufnahmen - Exaktvermessung Organic Eprints
Haas, Guido.

Zwischenergebnisse im Projekt Ökologische Bodenbewirtschaftung in Wörrstadt-Rommersheim (Rheinhessen, Rheinland-Pfalz) [Soil cultivation and soil health - first results of the project "ecological soil management" (POEB) in Woerrstadt-Rommersheim (Rhineland-Palatinate/Germany)] Organic Eprints

Comparisons of organic and conventional maize and tomato cropping systems from a long-term experiment in California Organic Eprints
Kaffka, Stephen; Bryant, Dennis; Denison, Ford.
Yield differences and trends, organic matter accumulation, and the loss of nutrients to deeper soil horizons are discussed using data from organic and conventional maize/tomato cropping systems from the Long Term Research on Agricultural Systems Project (LTRAS) at the University of California, Davis. Compared to the conventional system, higher and increasing yields of tomatoes were observed in organic systems, but lower yields of maize. Fruit quality, measured as soluble solids, was not significantly different. Soil organic matter increased in the organic system, but remained stable in the conventional one. More irrigation water was used in the organic system than in the conventional one due to higher rates of infiltration, but less winter runoff...

Crosstalk between Innate Immunity and Circadian Rhythm: Do fish immune defences have a sense of time? Organic Eprints
Lazado, Carlo Cabacang; Lund, Ivar; Skov, Peter V.; Jokumsen, Alfred; Gesto, Manuel; Nguyen, Huy Quang; Pedersen, Per Bovbjerg.
Circadian rhythms established by the endogenous clocks enable organisms to anticipate periodic and cyclic changes in their environment. This internal time-keeping system is highly conserved amongst animals and provides them with adaptive advantages as biological processes can be scheduled to occur at the most crucial times of the day. Circadian rhythm is emerging as an important regulator of immune functions. However, there is a paucity of information on the influence of this biological phenomenon in the immune mechanisms of teleost fish. A series of studies was conducted to investigate the circadian rhythms of systemic and mucosal innate immunity using model (i.e., zebrafish, Danio rerio) and non-model (i.e., permit, Trachinotus falcatus; rainbow trout,...

Earthworm sampling Organic Eprints
Peigne, Joséphine; Huber, Kathrin; Pfiffner, Lukas.
Earthworms are key organisms and indicators of soil quality, which also links to the productivity of an ecosystem. The higher the earthworm density and diversity, the better the earthworm’s living conditions and the more fertile is the soil. They are relatively easy to detect and determine into three ecological groups. The number and distribution of the three ecological categories and the numerous earthworm species depends on soil management, soil type, the Vegetation and climate conditions. In this technical note, various methods how to sample, measure and interpret earthworms are shown.

Exploiting Qualitative Information for Decision Support in Scenario Analysis Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; Vairo, Daniela; Zanoli, Raffaele.
The development of scenario analysis (SA) to assist decision makers and stakeholders has been growing over the last few years through mainly exploiting qualitative information provided by experts. In this study, we present SA based on the use of qualitative data for strategy planning. We discuss the potential of SA as a decision-support tool, and provide a structured approach for the interpretation of SA data, and an empirical validation of expert evaluations that can help to measure the consistency of the analysis. An application to a specific case study is provided, with reference to the European organic farming business.
